On 1 October 1944, a raid was performed by the German occupiers in Putten, Gelderland.
A day later, on October 2, 1944, part of the male labor force was taken to various concentration camps.
A total of 552 people died.
The raid was a retaliation for an attack by a resistance group against officers of the Wehrmacht.
